About the training
The DroneLIONS course is a three-day program that combines theory online and practice on-site. In the classroom portion, the necessary theory is taught by an experienced instructor. This is followed by the practical part, in which basic and advanced flight techniques are practiced. This also includes flying without GNSS support and practicing emergency procedures. In addition, important operational processes are explored in more depth. The theory exam is taken on a morning between the two parts.
This training covers the European standard scenarios (STS 1 and 2) required for flying in densely populated areas (VLOS) and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). It is mandatory for participants who wish to obtain European certification in a specific category.
Contents of the training
Theory
Compared to the A1/A3 EU drone license, the following topics are covered in greater depth:
- Flight safety and regulations
- Airspace restrictions
- Human performance limits
- Operational procedures
- General drone knowledge
- Privacy and data protection
- Insurance
- Meteorology
- Flight performance
- Basics of the SORA risk analysis
Practical training
The practical training is based on EASA requirements for STS-01 and STS-02 in the specific category.
Four phases are trained:
- Pre-flight preparation and risk analysis.
- Equipment checks and briefings.
- Basic flight techniques with GNSS support.
- Advanced flight maneuvers without GNSS and emergency management.
- In addition, post-flight checks and operational procedures are practiced.
Examinations
The course includes the following examinations:
A1/A3 competence certificate (40 questions).
A2 remote pilot certificate (30 questions).
EASA theoretical examination for the specific category / STS (30 questions).
For all examinations, at least 75% of the questions must be answered correctly to pass. Those who fail may retake the examinations free of charge. For the practical certificate, the participant is assessed by the instructor during the training.
Certificates
Upon successful completion, participants receive:
EU A1/A3 competence certificate
EU A2 remote pilot certificate
EASA theoretical attestation for the specific category / STS
EASA practical authorization for STS-01 and STS-02 for the specific category
With these certificates you can conduct flights under STS-01, STS-02 and all SORA applications.
